Overview

The Salleri route to Everest Base Camp offers adventurous trekkers a road less traveled through the majestic Himalayas. This energetic journey passes through peaceful villages dotted along dramatic mountainscapes, topping in the iconic Base Camp.

Though less frequented by tourists, the trailblazing trek rewards the brave with extraordinary vistas and warm hospitality without compromising on the ultimate goal – standing at the foot of the tallest peak on Earth.

The trek begins in the hillside hamlet of Salleri, far from the crowded trails originating from Lukla. The long drive from Kathmandu allows trekkers to slowly acclimatize while getting immersed in the rhythms of rural Nepal.

Stone cottages give way to lush forests and cascading waterfalls as the path ascends alongside the rambling Dudh Koshi River. Suspension bridges lead across side valleys toward high mountain passes graced with prayer flags.

After the high-altitude settlement of Ringmu, the trail merges with the classic Everest Base Camp route walked by legends like Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay during their pioneering ascent in 1953.

Trekking from Salleri appeals to budget-conscious adventurers willing to roam from more popular routes. The flights and packed trails from Lukla can be cost-prohibitive. Acclimatizing at a lower elevation also helps minimize altitude sickness – a common challenge faced by hikers starting directly at higher elevations.

With fewer fellow footfalls, the isolated hamlets along the way provide an authentic cultural experience. Supporting these subsistence communities through homestays and local restaurants also promotes sustainable tourism.

For adventure enthusiasts, the road from Salleri rewards with incredible scenery and warm hospitality while still ventureing the destination of Mount Everest Base Camp. The alternate route provides all the highlights of the classic trek without the crowds.

Trip PlanExpand all

Our representative will meet you at the airport when you arrive in Kathmandu. You will then be escorted to your accommodation in Thamel. After checking in, you can take a little break and shower to rejuvenate.

You can explore Thamel while staying at the hotel. It serves as a tourism hub. Restaurants, cafes, taverns, ATMs, and other amenities are available. You can buy handcrafted products as mementos from local shops and markets. In addition, hiking kits and quest equipment can be purchased.

To welcome you with dinner, there will be a little musical performance. I hope you have a good time tonight.

On this day, you can choose to visit Kathmandu's ancient UNESCO World Heritage sites to admire renowned architecture and monuments that have stood the test of time. The day also works for resting travel-weary head and organizing equipment for the days of hiking ahead.

Finally, the journey to Everest Base Camp starts. It is a long journey by local bus or vehicle from Kathmandu to Salleri. The magnificent sights of steep topography, lush forests, rivers, and natural beauty fascinate me the most throughout the drive.

The day begins with a trip down the twisting roads of the BP highway. You cross a bridge over the Sunkoshi River and continue on to Okhaldhunga. The stunning vista of Dudhkunda Peak draws your attention. The road leads to Solukhumbu if you keep driving. As a result, the journey concludes at Salleri in the Solukhumbu district.

Our journey begins in the charming hillside town of Salleri, surrounded by the soaring Himalayan peaks. As we embark on our jeep tour to Bupsadanda, take in the sights of colorful Buddhist monasteries and prayer flags dotting the landscape - hints at the local Sherpa and Rai culture.

We'll pass through green terraces of rice fields and tranquil Alpine forests. Our highest point will be the peak of the Rigmo Pass (3,071m), overlooking the majestic mountain ranges before we descend gently to the Dudhkoshi River Bridge (1,510m), the lowest elevation of our trip.

We'll continue to drive through villages inhabited by the warm Rai people. Our final destination is Bupsa (2,300m), but our journey's last leg will be on foot for a more immersive experience. We'll have a peaceful forest walk through rhododendron woods up to the Kari La pass (3,145m). Spend a night in the lovely mountain village of Puiyan (2,730m) to rest your legs after the 5-6 hour drive from Salleri.

As we continue our Himalayan trek, prepare for a gradual ascent up to a lofty ridge at 2,800 meters. We'll take in far-reaching views before descending into the village of Surke. From here, we meander along wonderfully flat terrain, contouring the landscape. Our path winds through fragrant mossy forests, where crimson rhododendrons and tall pines envelop us.

Enjoy the mesmerizing view of charming villages against the vastness of these imposing slopes. Our journey concludes back in the Dudh Koshi valley, where we stand high above the valley floor. After an eventful day, we'll overnight at a local guesthouse in Phakding.

Namche Bazaar is the Khumbu region's main town and trading center. The journey from Phakding to Namche involves traversing numerous suspension bridges over rivers and ravines. The walk is quite enjoyable.

You leave Phakding after an early breakfast and stroll through Benkar. On the journey, the breathtaking vista of Mt. Thamserku draws your attention. After crossing several bridges, you arrive at the Sagarmatha National Park checkpoint. You are given permission to continue your journey from here.

After obtaining a permit, the hike will proceed to the Dudhkoshi River. After crossing the river, you will arrive in Jorsale. After an ascent, Mt. Everest and Nuptse may be viewed. The path leads to Namche Bazaar.

Acclimatization is essential for mountaineering trekkers and climbers. It aids in the adaptation of your body to the altitude and surroundings. Not only that, but you can avoid altitude sickness when trekking.

Namche has a lot to offer on this particular day. You may learn about the Sherpa culture and way of life by visiting the Sherpa Museum. You can also trek to a viewpoint where you can photograph Mt. Everest, Thamserku, Ama Dablam, Lhotse, and Nuptse.

The walk is about to become more tough because to the uneven topography and routes. After spending time in Namche Bazaar, you travel to Tengboche.

You start your hike by climbing higher and higher. You arrive in Kyanjum after a short hike. You continue walking through the lovely rhododendron forest. Then, proceed to the Phungi Thenga River embankment. The trail becomes more difficult ahead. However, the breathtaking views of Mt. Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam make the journey worthwhile. After trekking up, you will eventually arrive at Tengboche.

The journey is becoming more spectacular. On the road to Dingboche, the scenery of glaciers and snow-capped mountains becomes breathtaking.

After leaving Tengboche, you descend through an alpine woodland to Deboche. Moving on, you arrive at Milinga above the Imja River and cross the bridge across the Imja River. Pangboche is reached after a long ascent. Mt. Aba Dablam enhances the beauty of the hamlet.

Shomare village is reached after a long hike. It is the final settlement before reaching Dingboche. Finally, you arrive in Dingboche.

We've arrived in Dingboche, a stunning scenic hamlet soaked in the quiet serenity of the mountains. It is recommended to schedule an extra acclimatization day here before setting off to ascend higher peaks. Taking it easy will allow one to attune the body to the high altitudes and fully relish the majestic Himalayan landscape without health ailments getting in the way.

For those interested, there is the option to take a hike to Nangkar Tshang Peak for photos unlike anywhere else! From this lofty viewpoint, behold the breathtaking sight of Ama Dablam, Island Peak, Cho Oyu, and Makalu simultaneously towering around in a grand natural amphitheater. The sheer size and splendor of the world's highest rocky giants will no doubt leave one awestruck!

After the mini hike, we'll return to Dingboche to rest and enjoy the regional hospitality and cuisine.

Midway to Lobuche, the breathtaking views of Mt. Everest, Makalu, and others captivate your sight.

You leave Dingboche after an early breakfast and climb up to the moraine above Dingboche. Here onwards, you reach above the Pheriche village. The magnificent vistas of Tabuche and Cholatse steal your breath away at this point.

After some hiking, you will reach Duglha Pass. Numerous memorial stones are expressly erected for climbers who perished on their way to the top. The trail continues until you reach the town of Lobuche.

Today, the walk begins early after a hearty breakfast. A difficult trail reaches the spectacular Khumbu glacier. The hike takes you through an uphill, hilly landscape. You travel to the Italian Research Center, then to Lobuche Pass and finally to Gorakshep. Gorakshep is a popular rest station on the Everest Base Camp climb.

The route goes to Everest Base Camp if you continue hiking. The time you spend at base camp is well spent. The panoramic view of Mt. Nuptse, Mt. Khumbutse, Mt. Pumori, and other mountains will soothe your soul. You travel down to Gorakshep after spending some time at the base camp.

The trek to Kala Patthar is the opportunity you've been waiting for. In Nepali, Kala Patthar means "black rock." You receive a close-up view of the world's highest peak, Mt. Everest.

After an early breakfast, the journey begins. You get up early to make it to Kala Patthar in time for sunrise. You take a straightforward path.

The golden reflection of the sun's rays on the mountain is stunning. It is more than a dream to witness such a spectacle. Views of Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam, Lobuche East, and other summits are breathtaking.

You make your way down to Gorakshep after enjoying a fantastic moment in Kala Patthar. This time, the path will take you to Pheriche while avoiding Dingboche.

The walk to Namche Bazaar begins early because it takes longer than other days.

After an early breakfast, you depart Pheriche on a downhill trek to the Pangboche settlement. The stunning view of Mt. Aba Dablam is visible from the settlement. After crossing the Imja River by bridge, you will arrive at Tengboche Monastery.

After hiking down to Phungi Thenga, you will arrive at Kyanjin. You can enjoy the scenery of mountains and nature from Kyanjin. You eventually make your way down to Namche Bazaar.

The time you spent in the Everest region is coming to an end. You leave Namche Bazaar on your way to Lukla.

You hike down to Phakding village, passing through various settlements and taking in the natural splendor. As you continue to descend, you will reach the town of Lukla. It's time to say farewell to the crew who made the journey possible.

Rise early to catch the flight back to Kathmandu, looking out the plane windows for Himalayan peaks.

When you arrive in the capital, take some well-deserved time to relax and process everything you've seen and experienced in the previous days. As the sun sets, explore Kathmandu's colorful restaurants and bars, where wonderful local cuisine, live music, and cultural performances provide the ideal environment.

On this day, you'll be driven to the airport to return home. We hope your adventure went as planned and that you met your objectives. We wish you a pleasant stay and hope to see you again soon.
